HOW TO USE THE SIGNAL FLAGS DURING RACING

AT 5 MINUTES, CLASS FLAG UP AND HOOT

Class Flag

AT 4 MINUTES, WARNING FLAG UP AND HOOT. USING THE BLUE PETER AS THE WARNING FLAG MEANS THAT IF A BOAT IS OCS (ON COURSE SIDE: IE OVER THE LINE) AT THE START ALL THEY HAVE TO DO IS DIP BACK BELOW THE LINE TO RESTART.

AT 1 MINUTE, WARNING FLAG DOWN AND HOOT

AT THE START, CLASS FLAG DOWN AND HOOT

Class Flag

IF INDIVIDUAL SAILORS ARE OVER THE LINE AT THE START HOOT, GIVE ONE MORE HOOT AND RAISE THE “I” FLAG. NOTE THE SAIL NUMBERS “OCS” (ON COURSE SIDE)

I Flag

lOWER THE “I” FLAG WHEN THE SAILOR(S) HAVE RESTARTED OR AFTER ONE MINUTE.

IF TOO MANY ARE OVER THE LINE TO RECORD, SOUND 2 HOOTS AND RAISE THE GENERAL RECALL FLAG

G Recall

WHEN EVERYONE IS BACK, LOWER THE GR FLAG WITH ONE HOOT AND ONE MINUTE LATER BEGIN THE START SEQUENCE AGAIN.

WHEN YOU WANT TO FINISH THE RACE, IDENTIFY THE LEADING BOAT AND GIVE THEM TWO HOOTS WHEN THEY ARE 100 M AWAY AND RAISE THE “S” FLAG FOR SHORT COURSE.

SC Flag

This sequence applies whether you are on the jetty or on a committee boat.

There are flags on sticks (in an old sail bag) available on Vrouwe Johanna, or you can use halyard flags which are stored in the white top-box.

On a committee boat start you can use the “Round the Ends” Warning flag in place of the Blue Peter if you wish. Any boat OCS during the last minute must sail round one end of the start line before she can start the race. You must keep a note of sail numbers OCS during the last minute when using this flag.

IF AT ANY TIME YOU WANT TO STOP THE START (THE BOAT ANCHOR MAY HAVE COME LOOSE, THE WIND MAY HAVE CHANGED, THERE MAY BE AN INJURY ETC), RAISE THE POSTPONEMENT FLAG (THE RED AND WHITE STRIPED ONE)  WITH ONE HOOT. WHEN YOU ARE READY TO START AGAIN, LOWER THE P FLAG WITH 2 HOOTS AND RESTART AFTER A FURTHER MINUTE.
