Saga Racing
What is Saga Racing?
The history of the Saga racing at Mudeford Sailing club stems from a number of retired members having the time to go sailing during the week. While the numbers involved were not many, the idea of having a reason to sail a challenging course and make some sort of competition from it was.
So how to organize a small friendly competition without a race officer, or starting gun or for that matter a time keeper?
I did say this was friendly?
So the idea grew from this stand point.
The sailors would convene at the club, have a discussion about the course, conditions and laps etc. probably while drinking Tea and nibbling biscuits.
Having agreed on a course, each would get their boat ready and sail to the start line.
Once at the start line, (handily positioned inline with our jetty) they would note their own start time and proceed to sail the course.
Once the course was completed, they would cross the finish line and note their time.
Each sailor would give their elapsed time to (the race officer) who would then by the power of spreadsheets and the Portsmouth Yardstick, calculate each sailors corrected time and provide race results.
This year we are setting our club buoys in the harbour and along with Highcliffe buoys and the channel marks along the river it is hoped that club members will bring this form of friendly rivalry back to our club.
To aid this type of racing, some of the Saga races will occur along side our social Saturdays when cake is usually available.
Please see the events calendar for proposed dates.
